Do I Really Need to Book a Boiler Service?
If you can’t remember the last time you had a boiler service, your boiler is probably overdue some maintenance.
It may seem like an unnecessary expense to arrange a boiler service when your boiler appears to be running perfectly fine.
This is a trap which homeowners continually fall for, and a false belief we’re here to dispel once and for all, hopefully before it afflicts you!
How Important is a Boiler Service
Your boiler is the heart of your central heating system, making it the one of the most important components of your home. They are intricate machines which need to operate at very high temperatures for long periods of time, and like any machine, should receive regular maintenance to ensure they operate efficiently.
A Boiler Service Will Save You Money
Neglecting to arrange a boiler service may seem reasonable in the short term, while your boiler appears to be running well, but it could cost you a fortune in the long run.
By neglecting to service your boiler, you’re increasing the cost of repair for yourself when your unserviced boiler inevitably breaks down.
Boilers which haven’t been serviced in years are typically in much worse condition than boilers which are serviced regularly.
By booking a regular boiler service, you are effectively ensuring your boiler is operating as intended, efficiently, and safely, all year round.
An inefficient boiler will burn fuel without converting it into useable energy. The more inefficient your boiler is, the more you’ll be paying for wasted energy.
For example, if, before a boiler service, your boiler only converts 89% of burned fuel into useable energy, then for every £100 you spend on heating, £11 is wasted.
The cost you pay for maintaining these inefficiencies quickly adds up, especially when you take into account the real likelihood of further deterioration of the boiler’s health, leading to greater, and more costly inefficiencies.
If, after a boiler service, your boiler converts 99% of burned fuel into useable energy, only £1 is lost due to waste.
To help visualise the exponentially increasing cost of neglecting to take care of your boiler, we’ve created this chart:
As you can see, assuming 1% of efficiency is lost every 3 billing dates, after 10 payments, you’d be paying 400% more by neglecting to arrange a boiler service for an already-inefficient boiler.
It’s also worth remembering that a boiler repair/replacement is FAR more expensive than a boiler service.
A Boiler Service Is Like a Vehicle MOT
A vehicle undergoes a formal inspection, and any problems with the vehicle are identified, recorded, and repaired, so the vehicle can be deemed roadworthy, meeting British standard
A boiler service is similar. A boiler service involves a complete strip down of your boiler, a comprehensive inspection of all its components, and recordings made of any faults or defects. If the homeowner is present, any problems with the property’s heating system can be discussed, and remedies agreed upon; sometimes even fixed during the visit.
From here, unless serious problems are discovered which warrant urgent remedial action, it’s the homeowner who decides what action is taken regarding problems with their boiler.
This is NOT how it works for landlords.
Landlords have a legal obligation to provide a satisfactory gas safety certificate–following a satisfactory gas safety inspection–to their tenants on an annual basis.

Protect The People You Love
There are many reasons to book a boiler service in your home, but perhaps the most pressing and important reason to book a boiler service is to protect your loved ones from danger.
An inefficient boiler may waste your money, but that quickly becomes irrelevant when contrasted with the devastation that could be caused by a dangerous boiler.
A boiler can be dangerous in various ways:
- Leaking carbon monoxide (known as “the silent killer”) into the home which is toxic to humans when inhaled.
- Leaking water, causing water-damage to the home, and mould build-up.
- Fire breakout.
- Explosion.

Most people prefer to avoid danger where possible. Booking a boiler service is a quick and easy way to increase the overall safety of your home for yourself and your family.
Even if no immediately dangerous problems are discovered during the inspection, a competent Gas-Safe registered gas engineer will be able to foresee future problems if subtle indicators are present, based on the condition of the boiler and it’s parts, and advise preventative measures.
A Boiler Service Is an Insurance Requirement
Of course, we can’t speak for all home insurance companies in the UK, but generally speaking, boiler warranties and home insurance contracts will require that you have your boiler serviced annually.
(This might be because insurance companies make profit by NOT paying out, and they understand that boiler servicing can drastically increase the efficiency and longevity of a boiler, minimising the likelihood of them needing to pay out 😉👉 )
Some insurers even include clauses which exempt them from needing to pay out if a boiler breaks down due to inefficiencies elsewhere in your homes heating system.
Our boiler cover plan covers all aspects of your heating system, leaving you in the best possible position all year around— efficient, fully functional heating system which qualifies for insurance pay-out should anything go wrong with your boiler.
Book a Boiler Service Before You Need One
Most people wait until disaster strikes before taking definitive action.
It might seem silly when you see it written on a page, but it’s a real phenomenon we should all be aware of when making decisions which affect the safety of our family.
Imagine you’re in a rush to get the kids to school, people an in and out the shower, then the boiler stops working, and the hot water goes cold…
Or, imagine the cold of winter drives you to crank up the heating after holding off from using your boiler throughout the Summer, only to discover that it doesn’t work.
This is what leads many homeowners to arrange a boiler service.
The main problems with this approach are:
- Once your boiler breaks, you will have to live without heat until the problem is resolved
- Most people experience boiler problems in the winter. If you find yourself in this majority, you’ll have a hard time arranging a boiler service with a Gas Safe Registered Gas Engineer, since they’re busiest in the winter.
- The occurrence rate and severity of problems is higher for boilers that don’t receive regular maintenance. Delaying your boiler service is likely to cost you more money in the long run.
We at Quinnergy believe it makes much more sense to PREVENT PROBLEMS rather than react to them.
Don’t wait until it’s too late.
Instead of waiting for disaster to strike you or your loved ones, take preventative action today and book a boiler service for your home.
