Fire Alarms: Essential for Safety, Essential for Compliance
Fire alarms are an essential safety component of any property, and homeowners are required to comply with certain rules and regulations regarding their installation and maintenance.
In this article, we will answer the question “how many smoke alarms do I need”, and provide tips for staying fire safe.
New Fire Alarm Rules in Scotland
Since February 2022, all homes in Scotland must have interlinked smoke and heat alarms installed. These regulations were put in place as a response to the tragic Grenfell fire in London in 2017 and apply to all Scottish homes
How Many Smoke Alarms Do I Need?
The new regulations require the following:
- One smoke alarm in the room most frequently used for general daytime living purposes, such as the living room.
- One smoke alarm in every circulation space on each story, such as hallways and landings.
- One heat alarm installed in every kitchen.
All alarms should be mounted on the ceiling – unless the manufacturer advises otherwise – and interlinked.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors
If you have a carbon-fueled appliance, such as a boiler, fire, heater, or flue, you must also have a carbon monoxide detector in the same room. This does not need to be interlinked to the smoke and heat alarms.
Fire Alarm Requirements:
- You can use either sealed battery alarms or mains-wired alarms. Both types of alarm can be interlinked by radio frequency and do not require Wi-Fi.
- If using battery alarms, they must be sealed tamper-proof units with long-life lithium batteries, lasting up to 10 years.
- Mains-wired alarms are cheaper but must be fitted by a qualified electrician and replaced every 10 years. This may require redecorating after installation.
- Carbon monoxide alarms, if battery-operated, must also have a sealed battery for their operational lifespan.
- Ensure that each alarm complies with the following standards:
- Smoke alarms: BS EN14604:2005
- Heat alarms: BS 5446-2:2003
Disposal of Old Alarms
Some alarms can be recycled at recycling centers, but others may contain hazardous materials that require special disposal. It is important to check the alarm for disposal instructions or consult the manufacturer.
If the alarm has disposal instructions printed on it, follow those instructions. If you cannot find the instructions on the alarm, you can try searching online or contacting the manufacturer.
Do I Need to Update My Fire Alarm System?
ALL Scottish homeowners must ensure their fire alarm systems comply with the new regulations.
Since February 2022, all homes in Scotland must have interlinked smoke and heat alarms installed. Interlinked fire alarms are much safer than traditional fire alarms because they all go off if one of them detects smoke or heat. This means that you will be alerted to a fire no matter where you are in your home, even if you are sleeping.
If your current fire alarms are not interlinked, you should replace them as soon as possible.
